Capsule Wardrobe Calculator
How many outfits does your closet make?
Count only pieces that go with most of the others. That’s what makes a capsule work.
“Fewer clothes, better outfits” sounds lovely until you’re standing in front of a small closet wondering if it’s enough. It almost always is. A handful of pieces that work together makes far more outfits than most of us guess, and far more than a packed closet of things that don’t.
Enter what’s in your capsule, or what you’re planning to pack. The calculator counts every outfit it makes and tells you which single piece would add the most new outfits if you bought one more thing.
How to use the Capsule Wardrobe Calculator
- Pull out the pieces you actually wear together. If a top only goes with one skirt, leave it out. It isn’t part of the capsule, it’s a single outfit.
- Count each group and enter the numbers with the + and − buttons.
- Choose what counts as a new outfit. “Just the clothes” is the honest everyday number. Adding layers and shoes shows how far you can stretch a travel bag.
- Check your best next buy before you shop. It tells you which type of piece would add the most outfits.
How the outfits are counted
The math is multiplication, which is why small capsules go so far:
Core outfits = tops × bottoms + dresses
With layers = core outfits × (layers + 1). The “+1” is wearing no layer at all.
Complete looks = outfits with layers × pairs of shoes
With 5 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 dress, 2 layers and 2 pairs of shoes, you get 16 core outfits, 48 with layers and 96 complete looks, from 13 pieces.
The “best next buy” tries adding one more top, bottom, dress or layer and compares the results. Because everything multiplies, the answer is usually whichever category you have the fewest of. Shoes are left out on purpose: another pair raises the count, but it rarely makes an outfit look different.

What makes a capsule work after 40
A capsule isn’t about owning as little as possible. It’s about owning things that all work together, so getting dressed stops being a daily problem.
- Pick two or three neutrals and stick to them. Every bottom and layer should be in one of them. Your Best Colors Finder result gives you a neutral list made for your coloring.
- Let tops carry the color. Tops are near your face and cheap to change, so that’s where your best colors go.
- Choose layers that go over everything. One great blazer or cardigan multiplies every outfit you own. See how to layer outfits over 40.
- Get the fit right. A capsule means each piece is worn often, so small fit problems become big irritations. Start with your trousers: the Trouser Hem Length Calculator helps.
From my notebook: the outfits that land in my “worked” column are almost never the newest ones. They’re built on pieces I’ve worn so often I stopped thinking about them. That’s what a capsule gives you.
Frequently asked questions
How many pieces should a capsule wardrobe have?
There’s no right number. Many people land between 25 and 40 pieces per season, shoes included, but a 10-piece travel capsule works for a week away. Start with what you already wear and see how many outfits it makes before you add anything.
Do accessories count?
Not in this calculator. Scarves, belts and jewelry change the look of an outfit, but counting them would inflate the numbers. Treat them as a bonus.
Why does the calculator suggest more tops than bottoms?
Tops change how an outfit looks more than bottoms do, and they’re usually cheaper. A good pair of trousers can carry six different tops. Six pairs of trousers with one top still looks like the same outfit.
What if not all my pieces go together?
Then the real number is lower than the calculator shows. Try counting only the pieces that go with at least three others, which is my three-ways rule. Those are your real capsule.
Is a capsule wardrobe cheaper?
Usually, because every piece gets worn more. You can check any piece with the Cost-Per-Wear Calculator. Capsule pieces tend to hit the 30-wear mark within a single season.
