Outfit Formula Generator
What should I wear?
Three outfit formulas, built for where you’re going.
Every outfit that has ever made it into the “worked” column of my notebook follows a formula. The formula isn’t a rule about what you can’t wear. It’s a shortcut: a top, a bottom, the right layer, the right shoe and one finishing touch. Once you know the formula for an occasion, you can build it from whatever is in your own closet.
Tell the generator where you’re going and what the weather’s doing, and it’ll give you three outfit formulas to try. Don’t like them? Shuffle for three more.
How to use the Outfit Formula Generator
- Pick the occasion. Choose the closest match. A school event usually works as weekend errands, and a nice lunch works as dinner out.
- Pick the weather for the coldest part of your day, not the warmest.
- Choose your shoes. Flats-only gets you formulas you can walk in all day.
- Read each formula as a recipe, not a shopping list. “A silk blouse” means any silky, drapey top you own.
- Shuffle if none of them fit your closet or your mood. You’ll get three different outfits each time.
How outfit formulas work
An outfit formula is the skeleton of a look: the types of pieces and how they relate, not the exact items. Every formula here has five parts:
- The base: a top and bottom that balance each other, like something fitted with something loose, or a single dress.
- The layer: matched to the weather and to how dressed-up the occasion is.
- The shoes: matched to the occasion, the weather and whether you want a heel.
- The finish: one accessory that makes the outfit look intentional. Only one.
The generator picks bases that suit the occasion and temperature, then adds the right layer, shoe and finishing touch. Shuffling won’t repeat a base until you’ve seen them all.
Why formulas beat outfit inspiration
Saving outfit photos is fun until you realize you don’t own that exact coat. A formula travels. “Fine-knit sweater, wide-leg trousers, loafers, small gold hoops” works whether your sweater is navy or camel and your trousers are wool or cord. It’s also why a small closet goes so far. Run your pieces through the Capsule Wardrobe Calculator and you’ll see how many formulas you can already make.
A trick from my notebook: when a formula works for you, write it down in five words. After a few months you’ll have your own list of reliable outfits, and getting dressed for anything important takes two minutes.
Occasion dressing after 40: what I’ve learned
- Comfortable shoes change your whole face. If you’re in pain by 8pm, everyone can tell. Block heels, pointed flats and sleek boots all look dressed-up.
- Sleeves are a style choice, not a cover-up. A sleeved midi dress looks more modern than a strapless one with a shrug.
- One statement at a time. A bold print, big earrings or a bright lip, but not all three.
- Avoid the costume trap. My guide to the outfit mistakes that make you look older covers the details that tip an outfit from polished to dated.

Frequently asked questions
What if I don’t own the pieces it suggests?
Swap in the closest thing you have. A “silk blouse” can be any drapey top, and “wide-leg trousers” can be wide jeans on a casual day. If you keep getting formulas you can’t make, note which piece is missing. That’s a useful shopping list.
Can I use this for a specific event, like a funeral or job interview?
Use “Work or a meeting” for interviews and choose the most tailored formula. For a funeral, use the same option in dark neutrals and skip the statement accessories.
How do I dress for weather that changes during the day?
Pick the coldest temperature you’ll be in, then choose a layer that’s easy to take off and carry. A trench or a cardigan beats a heavy coat on a day that starts cool and warms up.
Are these outfits only for women over 40?
They’ll work for anyone, but they’re written with the things women over 40 tell me they care about: comfort, coverage by choice, and looking current without looking like we’re borrowing our daughters’ clothes.
